Sail Onward To Your New Venture
Here's your chance to own a one-of-a-kind sailing charter vessel, S/V Mahala. She's a 1977 Irwin 44 Ketch, one of only a handful built, based on the CYS mold. S/V Mahala (means “strong woman”) is a graceful beauty with a roomy cockpit. She comes with a permanent mooring in Redhook on the east end of St Thomas USVI, as well as a designated spot in hurricane hole on St John USVI, and a website for a day charter business (www.hakunamatatacharters.com which points to www.sailinginstthomas.com). We have run charters with a hired captain the past three years with the Sea Scouts (top line income is about $36,000.)
Her interior is warm, rich & cozy with a spacious salon and a private forward queen v-berth cabin, ample storage & private en-suite bath with separate shower. Anterior is another (bigger-than-a-) queen cabin en-suite with separate shower/tub. Connected by a hall with tons of storage for boat bits & pieces, midship is the Galley. It has great counter space & storage with an upright fridge/freezer. Previous owners have nicely tiled the forward shower floor & galley backsplash. She’s clean, outfitted with basics & ready to be a home again.
PRICE: $55,000

The ideal buyer is someone who wants a simple but beautiful life in the Caribbean with a USCG captains license, a love for classic boats and a plan to run their own day trip/sunset sail business as well as the sea scout program. The boat has all the necessary safety gear and passed its USCG safety inspection prior to this past season. She’s a fine & fun live-aboard for folks starting out as cruisers or even experienced cruisers who want a classic. She's been very well taken care of, including these recently purchased parts:

Why are we selling?
We, unfortunately, just don’t use her. I co-own Paradise Yacht Management and we manage 30 term charter catamarans including crew and a maintenance team. The business is growing like crazy - we just don’t have much free time to enjoy her anymore.
We’ve sailed as far South as Grenada a couple of times. She did great, even when I’ve done that trip solo & nonstop. She’s got a lot of life in her & she loves to sail.
With a little bit of love, S/V Mahala has got a lot of good years ahead of her.

Issues
- The engine is original, hour meter can’t be right at less than 6000 hours. Perkins 4.154, starts every time, it’s just old
- The deck “crunches” in some spots. Not mushy.
- Stove top burner diffusers were broken and lost by scouts this season.
